Styles are used to layer blocks underneath the text area. Lighter and lighter borders give the impression of a shadow, without using images.
Note the curved edge of the shadows created by moving the last border along 1 more pixel.
This block has gaps in the bottom border that allow the shadow underneath to shine through. Two horizontal blocks are used leaving the correct gap in the middle.
