Professional Web Designer Claire Campbell's personal website Tanfa features an article explaining a different method from mine she uses to create link images - CSS Rollover Background Images - No Preload Required. She explains her intentions:
To use only one background graphic so the image will always be there, then move it around, as required, by specifying a different background position in the CSS for each of the "states" (:link, :visited, :active, :hover) of your <a> elements.
Claire has also published articles on Pure CSS Popups and how to create a 3 Column CSS Template. She was also responsible for the great CSS Zen Garden entry Fleur-de-lys.
