Heidi Adkisson's Web Design Practices "is a site devoted to helping designers understand what design practices are currently in use on the Web". It's based on a thesis she made on e-commerce sites and is well worth looking at. The topics covered include types of navigation and e-commerce functions such as the 'shopping basket' most commonly used on sites. From her studies you can get a breakdown of the most widely-used techniques for the placement and deployment of items such as menus and link styles.
