Album Of The Month

Album coverI first heard of this band when their song Half Man Half Machine was getting airplay. I loved it. Comical hip-hop from Wales! Then a single Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do hit the UK Singles Chart at No.3 - they were no longer obscure. I loved that single too, so I couldn't wait to get the album, which went in at No.5 in today's UK Album Charts. Their sudden success is surprising perhaps, but who can resist a fun band like this? Not me.

The lyrics are full of references to old school rappers, 80s computers and everyday references (like buying cheap jewellery from Argos). Different rappers share the limelight giving a variety added to by the great samples. Their style is not really anything new, but they do it well. Some tracks border on pointless (unless you're in the band I guess) but others are simply hilarious.

I decided the only way to describe this album was with a short selection of extracts, which you'll find listed below. I had to first edit the swearing - when these guys have a sticker on the CD saying 'Parental Advisory Explicit Content', they aren't joking!

Great fun.

Extracts

  1. Half Man Half Machine MP3 (1:25) 669Kb
  2. You Knows I Loves You MP3 (1:21) 634Kb
  3. Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do MP3 (1:01) 477Kb

Don't miss their Official Website too, where you can watch videos and play daft games. It's designed to look like a well-worn arcade machine (though the graphics look like the Commodore 64, complete with tape loading effects!)

For fans of: The Streets, De La Soul, Subsonic 2, Eminem, Bloodhound Gang.

I love this CD. I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed to admit that I'm going to see 'em when they play Liverpool.
My favourite songs are definitely 'The Maggot', 'Self Suicide', 'You Knows I Loves You' and 'Your Mother's Got a Penis'.

I love the 'it cost me twelve pound, from argos.. elizabeth duke!' line. lol.
(I'm also getting my friends obsessed, and since they're being dragged along to the gig with me, they'll be converts soon enough).

Did anyone catch them playing live at Radio 1's One Big Weekend last week in Birmingham? I heard a repeat of their live version of 'Guns' which was great! They had to change a lot of the words mind!

You can listen to clips here:

Also at Birmingham was the first tribute band - Mouldy Lookin Stain! (UK DJ Chris Moyles and his crew.) Download his version ('Dogs Don't Kill People, Rabbits Do'!) here:
