Evidence is mounting that Google are allegedly working on a Google Browser. According to comments posted on Slashdot, Google has already hired four Microsoft employees who worked on IE. There's also mention of possibly using the Gecko engine (Mozilla, Firefox etc). This would be great for the simple reason that a free download on the Google homepage would be a sure winner, leading to a massive increase in use of the Gecko engine. In other words, IE would no longer be the overbearing monster that it's become. I hope one day we might even see Gecko take over as the majority browser engine, since it comes in an increasing variety of programs. It's way more powerful than IE's current messy state (not updated for years) and continues to improve. This means we might be able to make wider use of advanced CSS!

Google are already doing an email service, so why not branch out into other areas? This comment on Slashdot stands out:

Google also owns the domains "GOS.com" "Gporn.com" "Goffice" and "Gword".*

I think it's safe to say they've got big plans.

*Update 22 September 2004: Apparently not! (They have registered Gbrowser.com though.)
